Playing with Flowers.
salahana. Ikebana studio in Kyoto city.
Ikebana is the traditional Japanese art of floral arrangement.
Our school, Sagago-ryu, is in the minority. In the early 800s A.D., Emperor Saga hand-folded pretty chrysanthemums blooming on the chrysanthemum island at Osawaike Pond in Daikakuji Temple and placed them in a vase on his palace. He was impressed by the beauty of the three elements of “heaven, earth, and humanity,” and said, “All future generations of flower growers should follow my example. This is said to be the beginning of the Saga school of ikebana. Emperor Saga's compassion for nature and plants is the foundation of the Sagagoryu School.
